In plain English

Capital Gains Tax Estimator explained simply

When you sell something for more than you paid, the profit is called a gain and the government wants a cut. Hold it longer than a year and the cut is usually smaller.

For example

Buy stock for $90,000, sell for $150,000 after three years, and your $60,000 gain is often taxed at 15% instead of your regular rate.
